PESEL (Polish personal identification number)

A personal identification number in Poland. Banks, notaries and public offices use it for identification, which is why you need it, among other things, when applying for a loan.

Polish citizens receive it when their birth is registered. A foreigner gets a PESEL on registering their address (zameldowanie), or can apply for one at the municipal office if they need it to deal with an official matter.
